Other states couldnt spend all their federal transportation money, so they returned it and Virginia got an extra $57.3 million.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) plans to use the money for paving projects: $16.7 million on interstate paving, $25.6 million on primary roads and $13.7 million on secondary roads. Another $1.3 million is slated for bridge painting and preventive maintenance. Later this month, VDOT will make its recommendations to the Commonwealth Transportation Board, which has final approval.
