White House Names NHTSA Acting Administrator

David Kelly will serve as acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the White House announced last week.

Automotive News reports that Kelly has been chief of staff to former NHTSA chief Nicole Nason, who has left the agency. Although Nason said she intended to serve until the end of the Bush administration next January, word of her departure was confirmed last month. Major decisions are pending in the final months of the Bush administration including the completion of new fuel economy standards for the 2011-15 model years and final adoption of a new vehicle roof strength standard.
