Mattos Pro Finishes Celebrates 80th Year

It all started back in 1928 when John Arthur Mattos began selling commercial and decorative paint products out of the basement of his house in Washington, D.C. From those humble beginnings, Mattos Pro Finishes remains a family affair, headed by sons John F. Mattos and Paul Mattos, celebrating its 80th anniversary as the region’s leading distributor of automotive paint and body shop supplies.

The business really took off in 1943, when The Mattos Paint Company became DuPont’s key automotive paint distributor for the Washington area. The company began to expand, first adding new store locations in Maryland (1952) and Virginia (1962). Today, Mattos Pro Finishes has over 150 ”employee-owners” in 16 branch stores in Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Important components of the company’s culture have been active participation in industry organizations, like WANADA, and consistent involvement in local community causes. ”In addition to all the support we have gotten from the WANADA insurance department for many years, our WANADA membership is a great way to keep in contact with our many dealer friends and stay current with what the market needs.” says Mattos Pro Finishes CEO Joe Mattos.

Joe Mattos can be contacted at Mattos Pro Finishes, 4501 Beech Rd., Camp Springs, MD 20748; tel: (301) 423-1142; e-mail: joemattos@profinishes.com.
