DC DMV to drop paper temporary tags by May 30th

Georgetown DMV office to close May 19

In an effort to reduce the fraudulent use of paper tags, the DC DMV will switch over to hard vehicle license tags for DC residents who buy used vehicles that need to be inspected. The new rules are effective May 30, 2012.

Department of Motor Vehicles director Lucinda Babers said the new process will reduce the fraudulent use of the 45-day paper temporary tag and also eliminate a second visit to the DMV after residents take their vehicles through inspection.

Babers is asking automobile dealers to notify used vehicle customers of this changeover and the fact that the customer must pay all fees associated with the title transaction when obtaining the temporary DC registration 45-day hard tag. The new tags will cost $13.

Under the new process, the wording Temporary Registration will print on the registration window sticker. Once the vehicle passes inspection, the owner of the vehicle can renew the 45-day registration by mail or online for the normal one or two-year registration period without making another trip to the DMV.

DC DMV will continue to issue 45-day paper tags to out-of-state residents who recently purchased used vehicles in DC and salvage vehicles and commercial/for-hire vehicles which must be inspected and classified by the inspection station prior to registration.

Meanwhile, due to construction at the Georgetown Park Mall, the DC DMV Service Center located at 3222 M Street, NW, will close on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 4:00 pm. A temporary center will open on June 4, 2012, at 301 C Street, NW, with hours of operation Monday-Friday, 8:15-4:00 pm.
