Many dealers use NHTSA’s Safercar.gov website to check the status of recalled cars they might be retailing. Carfax has another free website that can perform similar tasks.
The Vehicle Recall Search Service (www.freeautorecallsearch.org) was previewed at the ATAE Dealer Associations’ Winter Meeting and launched at the NADA Show. The VIN-based search tool allows dealers, state DMVs, insurers and others to search up to 10,000 VINs in just 30 seconds and inform consumers about vehicles with open safety recalls. The site, run by Carfax in partnership with the Auto Alliance and Global Automakers, requires only that users create a free Carfax account.Download Bulletin PDF
