Virginia Delays Minimum Wage Increase to May 2021

Last week during their veto session, the Virginia General Assembly agreed to delay an increase in the state minimum wage by four months, in response to a recommendation from Gov. Ralph Northam. The minimum hourly wage in Virginia will now increase from $7.25 to $9.50 on May 1, 2021, as opposed to January 1, 2021.

Beginning on January 1, 2022, the wage will to rise to $11 an hour, and then increase incrementally in three steps over the following four years until it reaches $15 an hour on January 1, 2026. The first of those three steps will be on January 1, 2023, when the minimum wage is set to increase to $12 per hour.
