Pennsylvania multi-franchised dealer is new AIADA chairman
Jim Smail, a Pennsylvania multi-franchised dealer with a variety of international brands, was elected as the 2011 chairman of the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA). Additionally, Smail serves as chairman of the Acura National Dealer Advisory Board and previously served as chairman of the Honda National Dealer Advisory Board. I truly believe that dealers need AIADA now more than ever. I am energized and very, very excited to continue AIADAs crucial work in Washington, D.C., said Smail, referring to the associations mission to ensure fair and balanced U.S. trade policies. Non-domestic vehicle brands now account for 55.8% of U.S. market share, Smail pointed out, which is a vital part of Americas economy.
The keynote speaker at the meeting, John Mendel, executive vice president, American Honda, said his company would resist any attempt by the UAW to unionize its operations in right to work states. The issue of union representation is one for our associates to decide, not us, but having said that, we do not believe that an outside party will improve upon our outstanding track record of success over the past 30-plus years, Mendel said.
Mendel cautioned that, despite overtures from a kinder, gentler UAW, import-brand dealers should not engage in counterproductive confrontations, but should remain focused on their relationship with customers.
