DC Team Tops Annual WANADA Auto Tech Competition Winners Advance to National Contest in NYC

After a day of intense competition between the best budding young technicians in the Washington area, Julian Carter and James Christopher Tolbert from Phelps High School in DC were the big winners in the annual Washington Area Auto Competition, held Feb. 13 at Fitzgerald’s Buick/Pontiac/GMC in Rockville, Md.

Sponsored by WANADA and Snap-On Tools, the competition featured two-person teams of top automotive technicians from high schools in the District of Columbia, Fairfax County, Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince Georgeês Counties in Maryland. Each two-person team competed for the right to represent the Washington region at the National Automotive Technology Competition at the New York International Auto Show in April.

Each team had to rotate through five 20-minute stations, judged by a team of professional automotive technicians and instructors. The teams were scored in the following five areas: a measuring station using micrometer tools, battery and alternator testing using a VAT 45 machine, diagnostic trouble shooting using a Tech II scanner, an alignment station and, finally, an ASE-based written test.

The Washington Area Automotive Technology Competition is one of the highlights of WANADA’s ongoing automotive education programs, said Nick Champeau, WANADAês vice president for public affairs.

The level of education and training of these participants, particularly with todayês high tech vehicles, is tremendously impressive. Weêre very proud of the teams we send on to New York each year and wish this one the very best of luck at the national level.
