DC DMV & MD MVA Announce Fee & Legislative Changes, Effective Oct.1, 2008

At WANADA′s Special Tag & Title Seminar held this week, the following fee and legislative changes were announced by officials of the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles and the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

In the District, effective October 1, 2008:

à Driver license and identification cards will be valid for up to 8 years.

à The regular driver license (non-CDL) fee increases from $39 to $44.

à The inspection fee increases from $25 to $35.

à The inspection sticker issued for new vehicles will be valid for 4 years instead of 2 years.

à New excise tax exemption for fuel efficient vehicles: The requirement for receiving an excise tax exemption for fuel efficient vehicles is set at 40 MPG for city driving (excluding motorcycles and motorized bicycles). The word ″hybrid″ used in the name of a vehicle no longer qualifies it for exemption. There are currently three models that qualify for the exemption: Honda Insight, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.

In Maryland, effective October 1, 2008:

à Motor vehicle excise tax credit for members of the military returning from active duty.

à Military Gold Star registration plates are available to eligible family members of the military.

à Certificate of title changes in the description and condition under which a salvage certificate is issued – damage is greater than 75% of fair market value.
