Automakers, suppliers and dealers directly employ 1.5 million Americans, according to a comprehensive study by the Center for Automotive Research presented at the Auto Show Media Day by Kim Hill, CARês director of sustainability and economic development strategies. Of those, 710,000 are employed by dealers. When intermediate and spinoff jobs are added, the industry generates an astounding 7.25 million jobs, $500 billion in compensation and $64 billion in personal income tax payments.
Additionally, the industry has a significant influence on many other sectors as diverse as construction, machinery, legal, computers and semiconductors, financial, advertising, education and health care, said Hill.
Funding for the study was provided by the American Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. CAR is working with NADA on a more detailed report on the economic impact of different dealership departments.Download Bulletin PDF
