Americans will travel in record numbers for year-end holidays, says AAA

Americans will travel in record numbers this holiday season, with most of them – 97.4 million – traveling by automobile, says the American Automobile Association. That’s a 3 percent increase over last year.

“More expensive gas prices are not swaying holiday revelers to stay home,” said Bill Sutherland, AAA senior vice president, Travel and Publishing. “Across the board this year, travel has increased for every major holiday weekend. We’ve seen the strong economy and growing consumer confidence fuel holiday travel all year long.”

In Washington, the worst time for travel is expected to be from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 21. AAA predicts that travel delays will be 2.5 times worse than usual at that time.

Holiday travelers will find the most expensive year-end gas prices since 2014. This December’s national average price is $2.47, which is 28 cents more than last December.
